Teams are busy, calendars are full and ideas are endless. Yet not all motion leads to progress. I have found that when it comes to running a dynamic business, knowing when to "lean in" and when to "lead out" can be what transforms movement into momentum, energy into execution and hustle into high performance. "Lean In and Lead Out" is a disciplined framework we designed for leaders navigating complexity and change. It provides a mental model for deciding when to go deep, get hands-on and push forward—and when to step back, zoom out and guide from the edge. In a world that demands constant adaptability, I've found that this balance can sharpen your focus, align teams and create meaningful, measurable impact. So, what exactly is the Lean In and Lead Out model all about? Lean In: Center And Simplify One of the most strategic and often difficult choices you may face is knowing when to step back from an initiative that’s not gaining traction. I call this “leaning in. ” If you're investing in a new product or expansion area and the signals aren’t strong—whether because of market readiness, internal bandwidth or resource constraints—it’s okay to reassess. Doubling down on something that isn’t aligned with your current strengths can drain leadership focus, capital and momentum. Sometimes, the boldest move is to redirect your energy toward what’s already working. Stepping back... --- - Published: 2025-04-25 - Modified: 2025-04-30 - URL: https://www.bzi.com/project-silver-eagle/ - Categories: Uncategorized In Madison, Wisconsin, Project Silver Eagle, a multi-level, e-commerce, warehouse, set to wrap up substantial completion at the end of April, with final details expected to be complete by June. No project is without its complications, and this project is no exception. Namely brutal winter conditions with temperatures plunging to -13 F and wind gusts up to 48 mph. It’s a brilliant example of success through Teamwork, Innovation, and Action. Each challenge has been an opportunity to stay nimble and seek solutions, whether it’s scheduling around inspections, material stocking, weather changes, or adjusting to shifting timelines. The Silver Eagle project is a type of structure our team is familiar with, where innovations like the MezzMaster®, PanelTable®, and SkyBrace® really shine. These innovations work seamlessly together to set panels and build with incredible efficiency. The size of this project required two PanelTable teams moving at all levels, simultaneously. This strategy led to a record panels set in a single day, with that record expected to be broken before the job wraps up. It’s this kind of milestone that shows how teamwork and agility can drive value for our clients and adapt to a project’s demands. Our team’s goal is always to focus on efficiency without sacrificing safety or quality. In reflection, staying flexible was a big part of keeping Silver Eagle on track. Whether it was managing job site materials or team coordination, several small, behind-the-scenes efforts kept things moving steadily. It’s easy to overlook the importance of those daily tasks,... --- - Published: 2025-04-25 - Modified: 2025-04-25 - URL: https://www.bzi.com/what-truly-binds-a-team/ - Categories: Uncategorized In reflecting, it’s not merely the deadlines we meet or the projects we complete—those are the surface ripples. The ‘benchmarks. In a strong team, you’ll find an unspoken pact that everyone plays their part, each shaping something larger than their individual efforts. It’s quiet, strong, and consistent, like a current running beneath those surface ripples. I’ve witnessed teams on the brink—timelines collapsing, resources thin, and doubt high. But each time, guided by their leader's vision and the team’s unwavering dedication, conflicts weren’t just patched; a path forward was reimagined. Great leaders can see the bigger picture, steering their team through the chaos, inspiring them to roll up their sleeves and turn challenges into opportunities. This is the real work of everyone stepping up, leaning into the pressure, and building something together. What has stuck with me: strength shines brightest when strain is faced as a unit. I’m proud to say that’s what I see in our team at BZI. Knowing we’re not just coworkers clocking in; that we’re a crew that grows through the grit. I’m convinced the strongest teams aren’t static—they’re alive, evolving, with every person sharpening themselves and each other. That’s why we pour so much into giving our team what they need to stretch further—not just for the work, but for who they want to become, because when they grow, it doesn’t stop here. It ripples out, strengthening the communities and industries we’re part of. Growth doesn’t happen by chance. It’s a choice—to show up, to wrestle... --- - Published: 2025-01-21 - Modified: 2025-01-21 - URL: https://www.bzi.com/james-barlow-named-ceo-of-the-year-by-cedar-city-chamber-of-commerce/ - Categories: Uncategorized BZI and its leadership keep rolling in the accolades. I am continually impressed by the teamwork and genuine concern for each team member’s success, coupled with the recognition of gratitude where it’s due. Our teams can-do approach and ability to make the impossible happen is remarkable. As a team, our work makes waves across the country and beyond. I believe it’s the BZI culture that liberates our team, allowing them to perform and break barriers. Eleanor Roosevelt said, "A good leader inspires people to have confidence in the leader; a great leader inspires people to have confidence in themselves. "This is exemplified every day within our team sets. We believe the power is in the seed, not the gardener. The best gardener couldn’t grow a single flower without the seed. Each of us is a seed, our leaders cultivating and unleashing each of us to contribute fully to fullfill our potential. Our leadership aims to embody this sentiment. In my opinion, success like this only comes from living the principles involved in doing the right thing(s) for the right reason(s). Our core values of Trust, Respect, and Integrity allow for unrestrained Teamwork. Innovation and Action. Why does this work? What is the key ingredient to the ‘Secret Sauce’? To boil it down into one element, the ‘Secret Sauce’ is easy. It comes down to genuinely caring about people. This structure is a standard, high-box building mostly erected with roof panels, with one section of traditionally erected roof panels due to interior tilt walls in one corner. The centralized location of this project, Kansas City, is ideal. It’s a hub for transportation and distribution by major freeways, navigable waterways, rail networks, and air, so close to the airport planes could be seen around 700 ft. directly above the building as they came in for landing. This project provided an opportunity to continue to strengthen the partnership we’ve long had with the general contractor. A new steel fabricator collaborated with BZI to erect the building, providing an opportunity to establish a strong working relationship. Our new steel fabrication partner excelled in delivering materials to the site on schedule and consistently exceeded expectations throughout the project. As it often is, the weather presented a significant challenge for our team in this project. The Midwest, especially this region, is known for its unpredictable weather. Initially, it was the cold winter temperatures, but as the project progressed, we saw high winds, creating a major hurdle. Over forty tornados were reported in the Midwest throughout the duration of the project, although none were seen from the job site while BZI's team was on site. There are varying degrees of facts and opinions, but I think most billion-dollar brands have one thing in common: They do much more than they say they do. Take Coca-Cola, for example. Many people think, "It's just soda. " But that's not true. Yes, their product line comprises a plethora of soft drinks, including Sprite, Fanta, Powerade, Dasani and Pibb Xtra. They have also acquired several successful beverage companies in recent years, including Vitaminwater, Topo Chico, Fairlife and BodyArmor. Not as well known is that Coca-Cola has other strategic assets across the board, including system associates, bottling partners, system production facilities and retail customer outlets. They also invested over $9 billion in system capital expenditures in 2023. All these investments have paid off: "With an increase of 9% YoY, Coca-Cola was the only top-10 brand to see an increase in value in 2023. " This investment strategy refers to what's known as diversification and vertical integration. I run a multi-million-dollar company that is projected to grow more in 2024. Taking a page from Coca-Cola's playbook, we have adopted the diversification and vertical integration strategy as we grow our business toward becoming a billion-dollar brand. Diversification And Vertical Integration What do I mean by diversification and vertical integration? • Diversification involves entering new markets or offering new products to promote financial security, industry growth and a larger target audience. • Vertical integration is a strategy where a... --- - Published: 2024-07-30 - Modified: 2024-07-30 - URL: https://www.bzi.com/bzi-and-suu-celebrate-the-positive-impact-of-the-growing-youth-engineering-academy-summer-camps/ - Categories: Company, Innovation Construction and steel company BZI is thrilled to see the results from its support of educational programs for K-12 BZI celebrated the successful second year of the SUU/BZI Youth Engineering Academy Summer Camps at a July 26, 2024 event held at Southern Utah University. Or integrating a Quality Management System? BZI had the same challenge. Our Chief Training Officer, Justin Barlow recently presented at NASCC in Charlotte, North Carolina and emphasized that in order to successfully implement a QMS, there are key questions an organization needs to answer: Why implement a QMS? Who is involved in a QMS implementation? Answering the "who" question first is vital in understanding the "why" in a QMS. It's important to understand the needs of the stakeholders. Involved parties in steel erection and fabrication include field team members, steel companies, general contractors, owners and jurisdictions, each with their own sets of needs, priorities, concerns, and motivations. Properly understanding the needs at every level of the stakeholder journey provides a path to providing necessary training and addressing questions at each level, leading to buy-in for the standards and the QMS system overall. Through our time of developing a QMS, we've learned several lessons: Management needs to appoint an advocate to champion the QMS development. Company leadership must be bought into the program but the drive behind the everyday effort is someone appointed by the leadership team. Focus on the team – the bolter and welder on the front lines. These employees play a critical role in the production process and are often the ones who encounter quality issues first. By involving them in the QMS development and implementation, the company can ensure that the QMS is practical and effective in the real world. When you think about the word Innovation, the idea of inventing a new widget or piece of equipment typically comes to mind. However, innovative ideas are often found not just in the object you create, but in the changes to processes that challenge the status quo and deliver greater value to your customer and your team. An Environment that Requires Innovation Our story of innovation began in one of the most interesting environments possible: farming. We started erecting pole barns and pre-engineered buildings – a far cry from today, where we work on major construction projects. Farm innovation taught us that necessity is truly the mother of invention. It occurs with few available resources – and it’s not uncommon to pull from the scrap pile to make a widget or salvage parts for rigging up a new piece of equipment that had never been seen before. Creative thinking is baked into everyday farm life, and we harness that spirit every day. Staying Curious – Always Ask Questions Innovation is a state of mind – constantly assessing and reassessing the processes and equipment being used with the ever-present inquisition: Isn’t there a better way? Identifying when to spend, how to spend, and how to market innovative ideas or products are challenges that BZI has experienced and... --- --- ## Press and News - Published: 2025-04-23 - Modified: 2025-04-23 - URL: https://www.bzi.com/pressnews/bzi-brings-construction-jobs-training-and-safety-programs-to-salinas-california-and-introduces-its-community-contributions-initiative/ BZI's Salinas, California construction project and Bakersfield office are bringing economic opportunities to regional businesses and communities. In fact, the industry needs to hire more than 400,000 new workers this year to keep up with demand, according to the Associated Builders and Contractors. This highlights a significant need for skilled labor. A blog by the National Center for Construction Education Center and Research (NCCER) noted a few reasons for this shortage, including the Great Resignation and an aging workforce. Post-pandemic, many people across industries quit their jobs rapidly or retired earlier than usual. And with thousands of baby boomers expected to retire this year, including those in the construction space, who will replace them? I believe training and safety also play key roles in the worker shortage. Learning a new trade, such as construction, requires extensive training and can take multiple years, depending on the skill. Moreover, according to the U. S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, construction is one of the top 10 most dangerous jobs, which can hinder entry into the field. As the CEO of a national construction company, I see the daily demand for young workers entering our industry. The good news is that it's happening. With the rising costs of higher education, some younger individuals are favoring trade jobs over traditional college degrees. In particular, more members of Gen-Z are opting for skilled labor and blue-collar jobs. What's Driving Younger Generations Toward Skilled Trades Traditionally, college and obtaining a four-year degree was the gold standard for young individuals. But that's not necessarily the case for... --- - Published: 2025-02-21 - Modified: 2025-02-21 - URL: https://www.bzi.com/pressnews/bzi-presents-a-strong-case-for-its-differentiated-panelization-approach-at-the-advancing-prefabrication-conference/ KANARRAVILLE, Utah--(BUSINESS WIRE)--BZI® (bzi. com), a leading steel and construction company nationally recognized for transformative innovations in its industries, presented the many benefits created by the company’s exclusive building approaches at the Advancing Prefabrication 2025 Conference this week in Phoenix, Arizona. Tom Harker, BZI’s COO, highlighted how the company’s differentiated technology in panelization is making prefabrication, modular systems and construction field operations safer, faster and less expensive. “Taking action is a key value at BZI. The results of our unique panelization approach speak volumes about its ability to engineer out hazards, improve conditions for workers, and increase cost-savings and product quality for our customers,” said Tom Harker, COO at BZI. “Due to these and other innovations at our company, BZI is seeing a continued increase in interest from worldwide companies wanting to apply the exclusive BZI approach to the construction of their buildings. ” Many construction companies erect columns, girders, and joist and decking one piece at a time, with assembly taking place at dangerous heights. This method requires all connections to take place at height and puts workers in precarious positions. In contrast, BZI’s unique methods allow panelized joist and decking to be lifted as a single module after being constructed on the ground. Harker shared the positive results of this panelization method in his presentation: Improved Safety: Reduces risks of assembling at height. Panels are set at six feet and are built on the ground; one single pick offsetting six other picks. Between the fallout from job loss due to the pandemic, the “Great Resignation” (where people increasingly and voluntarily quit their jobs) and an aging Baby Boomer workforce retiring in droves, the construction industry must immediately prioritize attracting a new workforce. According to the Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC), construction faces a workforce shortage of over 650,000 workers in 2022 alone. They noted that since the end of the Great Recession, workers aged 25-54 had dropped 8%, while workers 55 and over have risen by 20%. With the average retirement age at 61 years old, a fifth of the industry could resign within the next six years. Other factors contribute to the lack of attraction for skilled construction labor. Continuing supply chain issues due to the pandemic and rising inflation are making the overall price to construct in America much more expensive than in years past. That rising cost can affect the ability to recruit, train and retain top talent and pay competitive wages. And according to the U. S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, construction has the third highest death rate for jobs in the United States, making it less attractive than other careers. So, how do we solve the shortfall? First, embracing new technologies that are making the construction industry more efficient is critical. According to McKinsey, technology adoption in construction is lower than in... --- - Published: 2022-12-07 - Modified: 2022-12-07 - URL: https://www.bzi.com/pressnews/megaprojects-are-hindered-by-challenges-but-safety-can-bring-them-back-on-track/ James Barlow is the CEO of BZI Steel, a leading technology steel erection company providing construction project safety and efficiency. When you hear the words “construction megaproject,” what comes to mind? You might think of massive structures such as commercial buildings, airport terminals and distribution centers—and that would be correct. According to one definition, megaprojects “are large-scale, complex ventures that typically cost more than $1 billion, take many years to build, involve multiple public and private stakeholders, are transformational and impact millions of people. ” As an extreme example, the biggest megaproject in the world is the International Space Station, which has been in operation and construction since 1998 with an estimated cost of more than $150 billion. With the recent pandemic, many important megaprojects are facing significant delays due to ongoing supply chain issues, a lack of skilled labor and cost issues. According to McKinsey and Company, 98% of current megaprojects face cost overruns and delays of up to 20 months. In addition, supply chain issues are now coupled with rising inflation, making the overall price to secure the right equipment and construction in America much more expensive than in years past. And labor is in short supply. The Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) noted that construction is facing a workforce shortage of over 650,000 workers this year. Moreover, with the average retirement age at 61 years old, a fifth of the industry could resign within the next six years.
